Description
Beer is an important part of German culture, and history shows that beer was first brewed in Germany around 800 BC. By 1516, the Reinheitsgebot (Purity Law) was passed, dictating that beer could only be brewed from barley (barley malt), hops and water. While it has since been tweaked many times, this law remains the oldest food regulation in the world, and is still intact today. The law was enacted due to questionable hygiene standards in brewing, with contamination common and unregulated.
Today in Germany, craft beer is proving very popular, and some craft brewers label their beers by their styles - leaving 'beer' off the label - to work around the Purity Law.
Popular beer styles in modern Germany include Pilsner, Bock, Schwarzbier, Rauchbier, Altbier, Kölsch, Berliner Weisse or Gose.
