HOTEL MORRISON Pub / Hotel
Venue Description
The Morrison Hotel first opened its doors across the road as Hotel Britannia. Once that pub went up in flames, the Morrison you know today was built. Here is the history behind it. The Britannia Hotel was built following by the demolition of the first hotel The Duke of Cornwall which was built by a Mr Allan, a police magistrate on the corner of Stanley street and Allan street. The area was then known as One Mile Swamp. The Britannia was built on a floating foundation of 3 feet thick concrete, handmade bricks were used in the construction. In 1927 K & W Morrison bought the lease of the Britannia and in 1925 bouget the freehold. The old Britannia is said to be the first hotel in Brisbane to serve beer by gas pressure from the cellar. When Stanley was widened by 33 feet Mr Morrison exchanged his property for a smaller area one block away. He bought more ground adjoining the new site and in 1927 built the present Hotel Morrison After a long line of licensees MGW bought the hotel in 2002
