Japanese
Description
The first commercial brewery in Japan opened in Yokohama in the late 1800's, influenced by Dutch traders and foreign trade during the 17th century.
Today in Japan, happoshu or beer-like beverages are the most popular alcoholic beverage. Craft beers are a small percentage of the market share; however, they have shown promising growth each year. The alcohol taxes in Japan dictate that beer is taxed on its malt content. Recent tax changes that increased the price of Happoshu saw a new beer genre introduced to the market. Called Shin Janru (third beer), these beers use pea, wheat spirits or soy instead of malt.
Some Variants Include:
Happoshu
