Happoshu
Description
Happoshu ("bubbling spirits") is a Japanese low-malt beer that originally referred to a beer-like beverage with less than 67% malt content. It can also refer to 'alcopops' that contain malt. Japan taxes alcohol based on malt - the higher the malt content, the higher the tax. Due to Japan's progressively rising alcohol taxes, most happoshu today contains less than 25% malt. Malt is also considerably more expensive than the other ingredients (such as corn or soy beans) used in Happoshu.
Happoshu has a lighter taste than traditional beer, and has been marketed as being a low-calorie alternative. Due to the low malt content, Happoshu is commonly considered a low malt beer-like drink rather than a standard beer. The taste is known to vary between close to traditional beer to a malt-like soft drink.
