Kvass
Description
Kvass has been a popular drink in Eastern Europe since the Middle Ages. Invented by the Slavs, it was commonly drunk and used as a basis for their cooking dishes. It is produced from the natural fermentation of bread (wheat, rye or barley) and is sometimes flavoured with fruits or sugars. It is usually served unfiltered, adding to its unique flavor and high vitamin B content.
Kvass is typically low in alcoholic content (around 3%), and remains a national, patriotic drink in Russia, sometimes referred to as "Russian cola".
It is normally dark amber to honey in colour, with a heavy mouthfeel, like that of a soda. While there is some bitterness, the tastes should feature the bread and caraway, with the added fruits to sweeten the experience.
