Mexican
Description
Beer production has been in place in Mexico since the 16th century. By 1918, Mexico had almost forty breweries. The US Prohibition further bolstered beer in Mexico, with Americans crossing the border to access and drink beer. While European brewers successfully campaigned against pulque (a fermented alcoholic beverage), competition soon forced consolidation of the industry. Due to larger breweries buying out the smaller ones, until only two major producers were left - Cervecería Modelo and Cervecería Cuauhtémoc-Moctezuma.
Today, Mexico is the largest exporter of beer to the world. Mexican beer is typically light-bodied with a mild taste, and is commonly consumed with lime juice. Trends common elsewhere - such as beer on tap and light beer - remain unpopular in Mexico, with neither proving as popular as in other parts of the world.
