India
Description
Traditionally, beer in India was prepared from rice or millet. European beers were introduced to India in the 18th century, and in 1787, India Pale Ale was invented. This beer had a much higher alcohol content and more hops, sugar, and grains to prevent spoilage on the voyage from England.
In 1830, India's first brewery was established, producing the brand Lion, which is still available in India today. In 2015, b9 Beverages opened India's first craft beer. India's preference is usually for strong drinks, like whiskey, in favour of beer - in part due to its cheaper cost and higher alcoholic content. Craft beer has still seen rapid success in India since its launch in 2015, and it remains a promising market today.
