Czech
Description
The Czech Republic has been brewing beers since 933. In 1842, Pilsner Urquell was the first pilsner style beer, brewed by Josef Groll. It was the first light coloured beer to be produced, and became an immediate success, helping the town of Pilsen, who had previously been producing poor quality beers. Czech brewing is thought to have included hops since 1088, several hundred years before hops were commonly used by many other countries. Hops were not used in brewing in Britain until 1524.
Czech beers were originally likely a cloudy wheat beer, brewed using a top-fermenting yeast. Modern Czech beers vary in colour from pale through to black, and across a range of 3-9% ABV.
