Belgian

Description

Beer brewing in Belgium is thought to have started before even the First Crusade, when beer was brewed to raise money and drank because of unsanitary water conditions. The first Trappist brewery opened in 1836 and brewed beer exclusively for monks. The first recorded sale of Trappist beer wasn't until 1861.
Trappist beers are brewed in Trappist monasteries, and the monks must be a part of the production. The profits from Trappist beers must be used to support either the monastery or social programs. Aside from these qualifications the beer must meet, Trappist beers are of many different styles.
Abbey beers are beers which have been produced by a non-Trappist monastery, a commercial brewery with arrangement of a monastery or brewed under the name of a defunct abbey. As with Trappist beers, most Abbey beers do not conform to a particular beer style, although dubbels, tripels, blonde and strong pale ales are common.
