Australian
Description
Captain James Cook brought beer on the ship Endeavour, which was still being consumed in 1770 when the east coast of Australia was discovered. While rum was the drink of choice for settlers and convicts alike - even becoming an unofficial currency for a time - beer was promoted as a safer, healthier alternative to rum in the early 1800's.
Early Australian beers were not brewed with hops due to the difficulty of cultivating hops in the Australian climate. In 1804, James Squire became the first to successfully cultivate hops, which led to brewing rapidly expanding in Australia. In 1887, the Foster brothers brought refrigeration equipment from New York, and became the first brewery to use refrigeration in Australia.
Today there are many beer styles popular in Australia, although Australian Sparkling Ale remains the only style unique to Australia.
