Gruit
Description
In the Middle Ages, before hops was used in beer making, an ancient herb mixture called "Gruit" was added to create flavour and bitterness. This mainly consisted of sweet gale, yarrow and wild rosemary, but other herbs, spices and berries could be used to achieve a variety of aromas and flavours - some similar to a herbal tea. The Ancient Ales that resulted were said to have aphrodisiac and euphoric properties.
