California Common / Steam Beer

Description

California Common (aka Steam Beer) is an American lager style that originated in the late 19th century. As refrigeration was still a luxury at this time, brewers struggled to keep their beer cool. They used shallow fermenters, which encouraged the lager yeast to ferment quicker at warmer temperatures, and in doing so a special strain of lager yeast was developed. This medium-bodied beer is malty with a mild fruity flavour. It can be light amber to yellowish-brown in colour. Note that this beer is sometimes referred to as "Steam Beer", but as this term was trademarked by an American brewery the style should be referred to as "California Common".

Country of Origin: USA.
